3 Effective Ways to Get Out of Debt

Looking to turn your finances around to become a more responsible and less materialistic person? Getting out of old debt is the first step to having the simplistic life that you believe in. These three tips can help you walk away from the debt that burdens you.

First, create a budget. This means gauging how much money you have going out to pay bills and other expenses, and how much money you have coming in through your salary or paycheck. Once you have calculated these out, you can come up with ways to not only cut back on expenses, but have money left over to pay off debt.

Once you know how much debt you have in total and how much money you need per month, one of the best financial tips you can get is to start cutting expenses. This second method can include shopping at second-hand stores or buying pre-owned items. This can range from the clothes you wear to the car you drive, but buying a used but well-maintained item can save you hundreds of dollars while not inconveniencing you.

Third, you can limit or completely eliminate your credit card use. By not using a credit card, you can be sure that you are not absentmindedly putting yourself even deeper into debt. One of the ways that you can limit yourself is to only keep a credit card with you for emergencies.

These three methods can help you understand and control your spending for a new life free of old debt.

Starting Over: Life After Divorce

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - JUNE 07: (FILE PHOTO) Act...

There is such a thing as life after divorce. You just have to remember that it’s not about stuff. You, as the opposing party who didn’t expect it or desire it, may not feel that way, but rest assured, life does move on.

Georgia divorce laws, Illinois divorce laws, California divorce laws — it doesn’t matter what state you’re in, you’ll notice right away that material possessions usually monopolize the meaning behind divorce. Even children can be considered “possessions.” The reality is this: that’s what makes divorce so dismal! Who gets the house? Who gets the dog? Who gets the car? Who gets the kids? When does each parent get the kids?

The fact is all this debate can be exhausting. In the end, none of that stuff should matter. Life after divorce, honestly, shouldn’t be about the stuff, or the rules, or the laws, or which parent should have more rights based on the facts of the marriage life leading to divorce. What matters is simply this: You want your kids to have the best life possible. You know that the only way to make sure of that is to live your life. No bickering. No arguing about splitting the assets or money or whatnot. There’s no time or energy for that. Focus on life after the fact. A divorce can be way too painful to focus on the life that’s going on right at that moment.

Your divorce is happening right now. But just know that in the future, what you should focus on are your kids. That’s your life.

Understanding Sports Betting Jargon

For as long as their have been professional sports, their has been sports betting. People seem to have an innate desire to test their luck, betting on every aspect of all manner of sporting events, from horse races to football games.

Consider the Superbowl. People can not only bet on which team will win but also on what the final score will be, who will incur the most penalties and who will win the coin toss. Betting on sporting events is indeed a popular pasttime.

But if you’re going to bet on sporting events, it’s important that you know what it is you’re getting in to. Without the proper knowledge of betting terms, it is difficult to make informed bets. And the results of making uninformed bets can be disastrous, depending on the stakes.

Here are some common terms you should be familiar with prior to placing that first bet.

  • Book: The book sets the point spread and accepts bets on sporting events.
  • Favorite: The favorite is the team that is favored to win. Betting on the favorite will not yield as large of a payoff as betting on the underdog or the longshot.
  • Point Spread: Determined by a book, this is the predicted difference in points between opposing teams. In some bets, you don’t need to determine the winner but rather “cover the spread,” meaning that the team you choose can lose by few enough points that you can still win your bet.
  • Longshot: A longshot is a team that is not expected to win. If you bet on a longshot and it wins, you can expect to receive a higher payout.

Family Game Night

Sometimes individual family members get so caught up and busy with what they are doing that they don’t spend time together as a family. Lack of quality time together causes family bonds to fade away. The family is the most important unit in society and parents need to strengthen their relationships with their children. They can do this by having regular family game nights.

Having a family game night builds relationships in the family. It’s a happy time, a time for playing together, laughing together, and enjoying each other’s company. It also improves communication. When parents and children are relaxed, children are more willing to talk about themselves.

Game night can be a simple affair of playing games and eating a simple treat such as popcorn. Or, it could be elaborate with a theme, flyers or invitations, costumes, and specialty food.

Game nights are also a learning time. Children learn to take turns. They learn good sportsmanship. They learn patience as they wait to take their turn. If you play ping pong, baseball, or shoot some hoops, it’s also a time for physical activity.

Playing games can be subtle learning activities. Parents can foster creativity by playing games such as Cranium, Gestures, or Pictionary. Playing games such as Boggle and Scrabble builds children’s vocabulary skills. The games of Clue and Scattegories build critical thinking skills.

A family game night is an inexpensive family activity – much cheaper than going out to a movie where tickets and treats can cost over $40 a family. If money is tight, playing games is a good activity.

Maintaining a Happy Relationship

Maintaining a happy relationship can be a struggle at times.  Be it a friendship, family relationship or romantic relationship, the same basic skills apply to keep harmony.

When a relationship is going well, you feel happy and comfortable.  You enjoy many laughs together, you feel supported by the person, you feel safe in his or her company, you can share thoughts and you can respect each other.

When a relationship of any kind goes sour, it is not a pleasant feeling.  There may have been opportunities to prevent it from going down this road.  However every relationship is different, and it is good to be aware of when to try and fix a relationship and when to end one.

The most important thing to keep in mind in any relationship is to keep the lines of communication open.  Without open communication a relationship will surely disintegrate.  Open communication means talking regularly.  The conversation can be about anything, from what you did at work that day, to what you are thinking and how you are feeling about something.

Talking about feelings is where many people begin to feel uncomfortable about communicating.  However if such deeper levels of communication are not reached at least on occasion at some level, the people in the relationship will begin to feel alienated from each other and the relationship will inevitably become stagnate.

Maintaining happy relationships can be hard work, it can also be very easy.  Keeping the lines of communication open and discussing thoughts and feelings freely will help a relationship to grow stronger.  If not, the people in it will become alienated from one another.

How to Deal with Your Child Going Away to College

For many parents, their lives change drastically as soon as a child goes away to school. While this is an important step for these students, who are starting their own lives, this does not make the change for parents any easier.

Tips for Dealing with Empty Nest Syndrome

Interestingly, there is an informal condition labeled empty nest syndrome that describes this exact process — the process of a parent who is suddenly faced with an empty nest, or no children at home. What do you do when this happens to you?

  • Realize the child is not out of your life, just exploring the world. Do not take it personally that your child is no longer at home with you.
  • Take a vacation. Start a new business. Do something new and exciting that takes away from your thoughts of “losing your child.” You may find new opportunities at EarnMyDegree.com, if you want to go back to school yourself.
  • Find ways to be around other people more often. Join clubs or attend various organizational events. Getting around others is important.
  • Do find new ways to become yourself. For many of these parents, raising their children defined who they are. Now it is time to become yourself in a new and exciting way.
  • Take time to relax. You may now have the time you need to spend with friends and family. It is also a good time to catch up with your spouse. Try activities you and your spouse can do together.

These are all opportunities for parents, but it is up to you to define what the right move for your needs is. Explore new opportunities.

What’s the Difference Between the Classes in Society?

America's middle class

Image via Wikipedia

We hear the terms all the time in the media, but just what do the terms lower class, middle class, and upper class mean?  To refer to any class in society is referring predominantly to its earning power and potential.

Lower class is used to describe those at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum.  In contemporary culture it is divided into two classes, the working class and the underclass.  Job types associated with this class include service people and manual laborers.  The lower class are often portrayed as being uneducated and as filling easy job positions.

Middle class falls socio-economically between the lower and upper class.  The American middle class fluctuates, and constitutes for roughly 25-65% of all households.  The middle class is probably the most diverse societal group.  One of the major indicators to a person belonging to the middle class groups is college education.  This is more evident in the upper middle class grouping.

Upper class is the top layer of socio-economic society in America.  It is usually portrayed in the media as consisting of wealthy and powerful people who are also referred to as the capitalist class, or, as we more commonly know, the rich.  Those commonly found in this class include politicians, celebrities, business executives, and CEOs.  Within the upper class there are sometimes distinctions between its members, such as distinguishing between heirs to fortunes and celebrities, however they are mostly grouped in the one category.

Such distinctions in socio-economic class are not fixed.  Theorists are constantly arguing for and against particular classing structures in society and they will no doubt change in the future.

A Big Donations for the Heart

Instead of trading off or junking your old family car, you might want to consider donating it. It’s designed to help those who are less fortunate to have a means of getting around for various tasks. Car donations are becoming more frequent these days and you many find it to be a rewarding experience!

The first step in donating your vehicle is finding a reputable organization to give it to. There are hundreds to choose from, such as the Salvation Army or Kars 4 Kids, but do your homework because each organization is different. Find out their credibility and how long they have been in business. Most organizations will accept other items such as motor bikes, trucks and vans. Just remember that the vehicle you’re donating has to be approved first before it can be donated.

Once the car is approved make sure you receive a donation receipt. The beauty of donating a car or any other types of items is that you get to claim it on your taxes. This is due to the revision of the tax laws set back in 2006 that gives a hefty credit for such donations. You also avoid the headache of selling and negotiating a price with buyers.

Donating your used car is one of the kind gestures you can make to help out a family with transportation issues. Sometimes these organizations will sell the car and use the money to help those in need, too. Times are tough, but if everyone chips in to help one another, things will get better. Besides, your junk can be someone else’s fortune.

Go Green!

We live in times when the word ‘Green’ has taken on a new and very important meaning. With the environment in danger, human beings are also being severely impacted by this change. Here are some ways that you can go green in your life!

  1. Dress Green – There are several natural materials that you use for clothing. You can use animal fibers such as wool, cashmere, silk and angora. There are also plant fibers like cotton, jute and linen. Natural fibers are hypo-allergenic and are highly comfortable too. Fabrics such as cotton are highly breathable and are perfect to be worn during summer months. On the other hand, wool, made from animal fleece is meant to keep that animal warm and serves the same purpose for human beings. Natural fabrics are made from sustainable raw materials and hence don’t have a negative impact on the environment. You should make an effort to make these a part of your lifestyle.
  2. Eat Green – When buying food products, opt for products that possibly have no added preservatives, colors or MSGs. Preservatives are known to cause cancer and should be avoided. Instead, use products that have natural colorings. Also opt for organically grown fruits and vegetables. The inorganic fertilizers used to grow foods products are known carriers of carcinogens that you intake when you consume these foods. Organic food is safe to consume.
  3. Green Beauty – Instead of using chemical beauty and personal care products, opt for herbal remedies. Although chemical beauty products may have fast affects, they can damage your skin in the long run. Herbal products are safer to use and provide results that last longer.
